The 2021 ICCI Art Valley Visiting Artists program for international artist-educators working in China

Description:

The ICCI is announcing an open-call for 5 international artist scholars to participate (physically, in-person) in the ICCI ART VALLEY PROGRAM, October – November 2021. Selected artist-scholars will be awarded a generous commission, lead 2 workshops or lectures, and exhibit multiple works.

This year, we are particularly interested in artists whose work exemplifies the theme of international perspectives and influences on Chinese arts and culture.

Activities:

a. Engage in the China art community and collaboration with local artists.

b. Organized visits to contemporary art galleries and exhibitions in Shanghai.

c. Presentation of your creative practice at the 2021 International Conference on Global Cultural and Creative Industries.

d. Exhibition of your work at a downtown Shanghai gallery.

e. Promotion of your profile and artworks on the ICCI ART VALLEY official website and other official media channels.

f. Permanent exhibition of your donated works at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (a leading university in China).

g. 1 or 2 student assistants to assist with lectures, exhibition preparation and other related matters.

International artists are expected to be:

I. Artist-scholars with a background in higher education, i.e. institute/ university/ conservatory of Art

II. We invite applicants working in multiple art genres and from a diverse array of cultural backgrounds

Ⅲ. Public speech skill and fluent ENGLISH speaking required.

IV. Artists must be available for an in-person, physical residency during the whole program, delivering 1-2 public lectures or workshops, as well as attendance at other activities according to the contract.

Ⅴ. Bring at least 5 completed works to Shanghai for the 2 exhibitions.

Ⅵ. Donate 2 existing artworks to SJTU for the permanent exhibition. Providing a donation list with at least 5 artworks for SJTU Committee to choose 2 artworks or in a style specified by ICCI from your existing artworks.

Benefits:

The whole program package will  be at least RMB 20,000according to the committee’s review, including the following conditions:

a. Return flight ticket from Shanghai to the artist’s departure city.

b. Hotel single-room accommodation nearby SJTU campus in the program duration.

c. Lecture/ workshop/ material allowance according to your background and experience.

d. Group exhibition in a downtown Shanghai gallery and Shanghai Jiao Tong University History Museum.

Notes:

a. Visiting scholars are advised to arrange their own travel insurance as needed.

b. Cause by unpredictable reasons visiting scholars can't arrive in Shanghai, could pre-apply for next year's program.

About ICCI ART VALLEY PROGRAM:

ICCI ART VALLEY PROGRAM awards fully sponsored numbers of local, national, and international artist for designed art activities each year. We offer intercontinental travelling, art studio space, comfortable housing, and activities stipends. ICCI ART VALLEY PROGRAM has become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in Shanghai’s professional art programs, providing artist scholars the opportunities to exchange and collaborative with art education expertise, and build up close relationships within the artist scholar community in Shanghai. The artist scholar who are selected for this program can be at all stages in their careers, and the art work can be in all style and type, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, interdisciplinary, and architecture.

The owner of ART VALLEY PROGRAM, The SJTU-USC Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry(ICCI), is a joint institute between University of Southern California (USC) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). ART VALLEY is a consistently rising program focused on 3 significant missions: 1, academic art education and research program with Lecture and speech from art scholars; 2, conversation and collaboration between artist with diversity cultural background around the world; 3, cooperation and exchange with art business in China art marketplace. Since 2015, ICCI ART VALLEY PROGRAM has welcomed 100+ artist scholars and fellows around the world, for the accomplishment with the inspiration of their education practice, as well as the development of their education principle.

How to Apply:

Artists please reply with your CV (include portrait/ statement/ bio/ education/ art career or art practice experience/ work plan in residency/ Representative Works/  donation works) that illustrate your teaching experience in higher education institute, academic scholar practice and principle, as well as exhibition experience and collection records of your artwork.
